A quiet website is a sign, not a sentence

If your website is not getting enquiries, you are not alone, and it is rarely a mystery. Most trade and service sites that sit quiet have the same handful of problems. A tradesman website not working usually is not broken. It is just missing one or two things that turn a visitor into a phone call. They are fixable, and many take an afternoon.

We run an exterior cleaning firm ourselves. We have built pages that brought in leads and pages that did not, and we have learned why. This guide lists the nine causes we see most on trade and service business sites. Each one has a two-minute check you can do on your phone and a clear fix.

Do them in order. The first few cost nothing and often make the biggest difference. If you would rather skip the detective work, our free marketing review does the checking for you.

Nobody is visiting

The first question is the simplest. Is anyone actually reaching the page? A brilliant site with no visitors will never get an enquiry. A new site, or one that never ranked, can sit there for years without a single local customer finding it.

The fix

People find local firms in three main ways: Google search, the map results above it, and ads. Each needs a different job done.

  • One page for each main service, with your town or area in the heading
  • A complete Google Business Profile to show in the map results
  • Local links and listings that show your business name, area and phone number the same way everywhere
  • Paid ads if you need enquiries this month rather than in six months

Our local SEO for service businesses builds those pages and signals so you show up where customers search. If you need leads faster, ads can switch on within days, which is why we usually pair the two.

It is slow on a phone

People searching for a trade are often in a hurry. A boiler has packed in, a gutter is leaking, a lock has jammed. If your page takes more than a few seconds to show anything, many will tap back and call the next result. Google also treats page speed as part of its experience signals, so slow pages can hurt in search too.

The usual speed culprits

  • Photos straight off a phone, several megabytes each
  • A slider or video that loads before the page can be used
  • Lots of plugins, pop-ups and chat widgets you no longer use
  • Cheap hosting that is slow to respond

The fix

  • Resize and compress every image, and use modern formats such as WebP
  • Load only what the first screen needs, and let the rest load later
  • Remove plugins and scripts you do not use
  • Use decent hosting, and keep the page light with a clear headline and one button

This is how we build every fast, phone-first website: small images, no clutter, and the call button where your thumb already is.

There is no obvious next step

Visitors do not read your site. They scan it. If they cannot see in a couple of seconds what to do next, most leave. Many trade sites show a nice photo and a long paragraph, then a tiny "contact" link in the menu. For a small business, website conversion is simply the share of visitors who get in touch, and a hidden next step is the quickest way to lose them.

The fix

Pick one main action and make it obvious. For most service businesses that is a quote request or a phone call. Put it at the top, repeat it after every section, and make it a big, coloured button with plain words. Add a tap-to-call number and a WhatsApp button for people who would rather message.

Here is what a clear first screen looks like on a phone, and what a weak one gets wrong.

A weak first screen

  • "Welcome to our website" as the headline
  • No job or town named
  • Contact hidden in the menu

A clear first screen

  • The job and the town in the headline
  • One big quote button straight under it
  • A short form with three fields

There is no proof on the page

Anyone can say they are friendly, reliable and fully insured. A stranger with a problem wants evidence before they hand over their number or let you onto their property.

The fix

  • Real before and after photos from your own jobs, not stock images
  • A genuine customer comment with a first name and town, used with permission
  • Any accreditation, insurance or trade body you hold, stated plainly
  • A short line on who you are, who turns up, and how long you have been doing this
  • Results you can actually back up

We keep our own proof out in the open. Our roof cleaning ad brought in 38 leads in two weeks at £7.42 each, and those turned into £8,450 of booked jobs. You do not need figures like that on day one. You do need something real. See how we show it on our results page.

Unclear services and areas

A visitor needs to know three things quickly: do you do the job they need, do you cover where they live, and are you a proper local business. Vague pages like "We offer a range of services across the region" answer none of them.

The fix

Name each service in plain words, and name the places you cover. Give your main services their own pages, each with a clear heading, a short description, photos and a button. Search engines also use this to work out who to show you to.

Builders are a good example. A builder's site should say whether it takes extensions, loft conversions or small repairs, and for which postcodes. Otherwise a customer with an extension in mind assumes you only do small jobs, and moves on.

Avoid one page listing forty towns. Cover your real area in plain sentences and give your biggest towns a proper page of their own.

The form is buried or too long

Plenty of trade sites hide the enquiry form on a contact page that takes three taps to reach, then ask for a dozen details. Every extra field loses someone, and most visitors on a phone will not type an essay.

The fix

  • Ask only for name, phone number and what they need
  • Put the form, or a button to it, on every page and near the top
  • Make fields and buttons big enough to tap easily
  • Say what happens next, such as "We will ring you the same day"
  • Add a tap-to-call number and a WhatsApp option beside the form

Then make sure the enquiry reaches you quickly. A form that sends an email you read tomorrow is no better than none. Instant WhatsApp lead alerts put the name, number and job on your phone the moment someone presses send.

Checking nine things yourself is doable, but it is easy to miss what you see every day. Tell us your website and your trade, and on a free 20-minute call we will tell you what to fix first, in plain English.

No reviews anywhere

Reviews are often the deciding factor between two similar firms. If a customer searches your name and finds nothing, or only one old comment, doubt creeps in. Reviews also help you show up in the map results.

The fix

Ask every happy customer for a review, the same day, while the result is fresh. Send a direct link by text or WhatsApp so it takes one tap. Reply to every review, good or bad, politely. Then show the best ones on your website, with the customer's permission.

Do not buy reviews or write your own. It breaks platform rules, customers can tell, and it can get your listing removed. Our review generation sends the request automatically after each job, so you never forget.

Enquiries are not followed up

Sometimes the website is working fine. The enquiries arrive, but nobody replies in time, so they feel like they never came. People often message two or three firms at once, and the one that answers first is usually the one that gets the job.

The fix

  • Send every new enquiry straight to your phone
  • Aim to ring back within minutes, not hours
  • Use an automatic text back for missed calls
  • Chase quotes politely for about a week, then stop

Read our guide on how to follow up leads fast with WhatsApp for the full routine and message templates. If calls are the bigger gap, our missed-call text back and AI phone receptionist cover the times you cannot pick up.

Not linked to your Business Profile

For local searches, your Google Business Profile is often seen before your website. It is the card with your name, reviews, photos and phone number. If it is missing, unclaimed or out of date, you lose calls and visits before anyone reaches your site.

The fix

  • Claim and verify your profile
  • Choose the right main category and add your other services
  • Set the areas you serve rather than a street address if you work from home
  • Link to the right page on your website, with a tracked phone number if you can
  • Add fresh photos and posts regularly

Our Google Business Profile optimisation sets it all up properly and keeps it active.

What to fix first

Do not try to fix everything at once. Start with the changes that cost least and help most, then move down the list.

If you already get visitors, start with the next step, the form, proof and your follow-up. These help people who are already on the page. If you get few visitors, work on your Business Profile, reviews and local pages in parallel, and think about ads to bring in enquiries sooner.

Questions about website enquiries

Why is my website not generating leads?

Almost always one of nine things: nobody is visiting, the site is slow on a phone, there is no clear next step, there is no proof, it is unclear what you do and where, the form is buried, there are no reviews, enquiries are not followed up, or the site is not linked to your Google Business Profile. Work down the list in this guide and you will usually find the culprit in under an hour.

How many enquiries should a trade website get?

It depends on your trade, your area and how many people visit. There is no honest single number. A better test is whether the people who do visit are getting in touch. If visitors arrive and nobody enquires, the page is the problem. If hardly anyone arrives, traffic is the problem.

Do I need a new website, or can I fix the one I have?

Most of the time you can fix what you have. Add a clear button, a short form, real photos and your areas, and make sure it loads fast on a phone. If the site is built on something you cannot edit, or it is very old, a rebuild can be cheaper than patching. See our websites for service businesses for what we build.

How long does it take to see more enquiries after fixing my site?

Fixes to the page itself, like a clearer button and a shorter form, can change results as soon as they go live, if you already have visitors. Search improvements take longer, often weeks to months, and vary by area and competition. Nobody can promise a number.

Is my website the problem, or do I just need ads?

Both can be true. A great site with no visitors gets nothing, and ads sent to a weak page waste money. Fix the basics first, then send traffic. We cover the trade-off in our guide to Facebook ads versus Google ads for trades.

Can you check my website for me?

Yes. Our free marketing review looks at your site, your Google Business Profile and how fast you follow up leads. You get a plain-English list of what to fix first.
